What can YCT do for you?
Networking Opportunities
Additionally, meeting conservative like‐minded students, you will also be in a position to meet distinguished YCT alumni and important political figures both locally and nationally. Being active in YCT "puts your foot in the door". Meeting people that can later offer you a job or career benefits is always helpful.
Internships
Whether it's Washington D.C. or Austin, Texas, legislators and congressmen are always looking for bright‐minded YCT students to work through a session. Over the years, YCT students have served in numerous offices for state legislators, congressmen, and senators.
Political Debates and Education
YCT gives students access to information and provides a "how to" on conducting political debates on college campuses. Having information and being educated is only half the battle. Being able to express your views in a calm and educated manner is the key to changing minds.
Demonstrations and Rallies
Impacting policy is informing those that are unaware of the situation. Showing the public that YCT has a stance, is informed on the issues and carries this stance out around the state through demonstrations and rallies is a key part of the activism that YCT performs.
Endorsements and Campaigning
As a non‐partisan organization, YCT has the ability to endorse candidates in contested elections, including primary and run‐off contests. YCT goes through an extensive process with each candidate in the contested races that includes questionnaires, personal interviews, and research of the issues important to each district. After endorsing the most conservative candidates, YCT provides manpower for the candidates to help in grass‐roots campaign efforts.
Lobbying the State Legislators
Before each legislative session, YCT creates a legislative agenda on issues that are important to conservatives statewide. YCT then focuses our efforts on a few of the most critical issues facing the Texas Legislature by compiling research on these issues and lobbying the Legislature. YCT has the reputation of taking the lead on positions for conservative values concerning higher education issues and fiscal policy issues.
Ratings
Since 1975, YCT has prepared its ratings of legislators as a public service to the citizens of Texas. The purpose is to better inform them of the activities and performance of their elected officials. The YCT ratings cover an important period in Texas history. Since our first ratings, we have witnessed dramatic changes in Texas politics. During the past 30 years, Texans have seen the emergence of a viable Republican Party and the virtual disappearance of a conservative presence in the Democratic Party.
State Board Meetings
Every six to eight weeks, chapters throughout Texas gather at a chosen university to set the direction of the statewide organization. This is also a great way to meet other like‐minded conservative students from other university chapters.
Summer Retreat
After a long school year of juggling classes and conservative activism, why not take a few days to relax and have fun! Whether it's in the Hill Country or on a Texas Beach, each summer YCT students throughout Texas come together for cookouts, fun, and discussion concerning memories from the past year.
Annual Convention
In late March or early April of each year, YCT chapters from across the state gather together to celebrate their year of work. While attending State Convention, students have access to political workshops, high‐ranking political officials, and ideas for the upcoming year.
